![]() ![]() Otherwise, we would have needed a draft horse to handle the chore.)Ĭollecting the sill logs (those that form the bottom layer on each wall of the cabin) required a special trip, since they had to be the largest of all. (Fortunately, all our towing was downhill. We found that it was better to peel the logs immediately, because if the bark was left on the trunk for more than a few days, it would adhere to the dead tree and have to be laboriously whittled away with a drawknife.Īfter the trunks were barked, we cut them into lengths and hauled them out of the woods with the help of an old set of iron wheels that we pulled with ropes. Then, with an axe or a hardwood barking spud (a 2-foot-long stick with a wedge-shaped tip) we stripped the bark off each trunk. Working together, my wife and I felled each tree using a 5-foot crosscut saw and then removed the limbs. Most of the conifers we earmarked for our dwelling measured only about seven to nine inches in diameter and thus were too small to have commercial value. We selected trees from our dense second-growth forest which needed thinning. Next on our agenda was the exciting - and often backbreaking - task of finding, cutting, and hauling in the logs that would soon become the walls of our home. ![]() After the extra spaces in the openings were packed with gravel, I topped the “stilts” with large plates of sheet metal to keep termites and small rodents out of the cabin. Using four bags of mortar mix, I made sturdy cement-and-stone piers in each of the holes, extending the supports 18 inches above ground level. Next, I dug six holes, three on each side, to a depth of 2-1/2 feet, right at the wall line of the cabin, and hauled in 20 wheelbarrowfuls of large, flat rocks that we’d gathered on the property. While my father - who had volunteered to help during his vacation - worked on our outhouse, I marked the borders of the cabin’s foundation with stakes and string. When our plans were drawn up, we chose a cleared and level site with nearby water, pitched a couple of large tents for temporary shelter, and packed in enough flour and beans to sustain us during a summer of hard work. Creative planning and the careful placement of doors could allow a much larger house to be built, but I always encourage first-timers to think small (and then possibly add on needed space later). We didn’t want to have to deal with logs any longer than 16 feet, so our home measures 10 feet by 13 feet inside. The size of our cabin was limited more by our stamina than by the design. A traditional stabbur also features extra-wide eaves, which repel rain and snow small windows and a low door, which help reduce heat loss and an upstairs loft, which serves to nearly double the available floor space. After researching several log house styles, we decided to build a home patterned after the Norwegian stabbur, which is a storehouse built on a raised foundation of pillars or stilts. One of the ways in which we kept our expenses down was to choose an uncomplicated design for our cabin.

![]() Your resume should reflect your robust skills set - your ability to assist with diagnostic tests, take vital signs, and provide emotional support to patients. Your resume should not just outline your skills, but also showcase how those skills were applied in a remote context - a nurses' station is vastly different from a home office.Īs a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), you play a vital role in the healthcare industry, often serving as the backbone of patient care. While traditional nursing skills are important, you also need to demonstrate your familiarity with these new technologies and how you've used them in patient care. With the rise of digital health platforms, telemedicine, and remote patient monitoring, quite a few healthcare providers are seeking remote nurses who are comfortable with technology. When you're putting together your resume, remember that hiring managers for remote roles are looking for specifics - they want to see how your skills translate to the digital realm. The recent shift towards telehealth and online patient care, especially during COVID-19, has created a surge in these types of roles. Remote nursing roles often require a higher level of independence, self-motivation, and tech savvy abilities, as you won't have physical assistance from colleagues or direct supervision. If you're seeking a remote nursing position, your resume needs to reflect your unique set of skills. So, your resume should reflect not just the tasks you can perform but also your leadership style and how that contributes to an efficient and collaborative work environment. They want leaders who can handle high-stress situations, manage conflicts and bring teams together. The industry has shifted slightly too, employers are putting a lot of emphasis on soft skills. Additionally, with the digitization trend in healthcare, showcasing comfort and competency with medical software or telehealth can really make you stand out. So one key thing when writing your resume is showcasing how you perform nursing tasks while leading the team. Nowadays, nurses are not just caregivers but also patient educators and advocates, role flexibility that employers love. It's a job heavily reliant on excellent communication and management skills. As a Charge Nurse, you're essentially the team leader, the one who sets the pace and coordinates the entire nursing staff. The Charge Nurse role is a pivotal one in healthcare. A well-made ER nurse resume is not just a list of duties, but a showcase of your skills and contributions in a high-pressure environment. To dodge this digital gatekeeper, you need to include relevant keywords and demonstrate your experience through quantifiable achievements. Many hospitals and healthcare institutions use Application Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter through the flood of resumes. Therefore, your resume needs to show not just your qualifications, but also your knack for handling stressful situations and interacting with patients.Īdditionally, these days the hiring process has evolved considerably. More and more, ER Nursing roles require a balance of technical abilities and emotional intelligence. Recently, there's been a trend of emphasizing special skills like triage, emergency procedures, and trauma care. When you're crafting your resume, it's essential to wrap this trifecta in a neat, compelling package. This job requires a unique blend of quick thinking, medical expertise, and genuine compassion. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 12% job growth for nurses over the next several years, well above the national average.īeing an ER Nurse is no walk in the park. Nurses are also likely to see a greater emphasis on technology in healthcare, including telehealth visits, medical chatbots, and online education programs. Shortages elsewhere in the medical field are likely to lead to an increased demand and higher responsibilities for Nurse Practitioners and more nurses choosing to specialize. In 2023, the face of nursing is expected to change significantly. Aspiring nurses can pursue a Diploma, Associate Degree, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing, while accelerated programs are open to those with an existing undergraduate degree or experience in the field. There are multiple pathways leading to nursing, all culminating in the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Whatever your role, as a nurse, you’ll find that soft skills - including communication, problem solving, and conflict resolution - are essential, as are hard skills in patient care, technology, and basic medical procedures. Nurses can choose from dozens of specialties and a variety of settings, including frontline hospital work, education, and private healthcare. ![]() Nursing is a demanding but incredibly rewarding field, requiring dedication, compassion, and a lot of hard work. ![]() ![]() But really, just over a hundred quid, what do you expect? Unless your videos are in H.264 or QuickTime, you'll need to use the supplied software to convert them before you can put them on the iPod. The main problem with all Apple iPods is that they are very limited in terms of the files they can play. This flexibility will be enough to convince many to buy it. Although the mom in me worries about unwanted attention but if there is an adult in the area who can be trusted to watch over those young girls then I don't see the hurt.īut if you don't feel comfortable letting her wear a full on thong bikini then maybe compromise and look at something on the cheeky side like hipster kind of style vs a full on thong bikini. And it sounds like it's the cultural norm like you said for that area. I partly agree that if she's confident in her own skin don't deny her wishes solely on what others will think. I will say that I struggled with and still do struggle with body dysmorphia mainly from my parents swearing that young ladies don't show too much skin and if you show too much it's no appropriate and would make a HUGE deal over it drilling it into my head. I love that you are trying to make the right choice by your daughter. (And of course at the same time teach our boys to not be sexist assholes.) At the same time, I acknowledge that in the real world we must equip and empower our daughters to make decisions knowing that bc we live in a messed up sexist world, women just need to be more cognizant of their safety than men do. Of course I want my daughter to wear whatever makes her happy and not feel shame about her body and most importantly, if something were to happen to never ever blame herself or her choice of clothing. But the reality is, we don’t live in that world so as a parent, it’s not easy. Yes in a perfect world, women and girls could wear whatever they want, drink as much as they want and should never have to fear about unwanted attention. I’m talking about this in a broader context, not this specific situation. I think it’s a more complex thing than just telling her she can do and wear whatever she wants. I agree with you but I can also see where OP is coming from in wanting to protect her daughter. I would love to hear from any moms who faced a similar choice, and I'd want to know what you chose, and in retrospect, do you feel you made the right choice or not, and why? If you believe a 13 year old is simply too young for a cheeky/thong bikini, I respect your opinion but this isn't really what I'm asking for. Would I be sending a bad message if I don't let her get one? Like implying there is something wrong with her, or her new friends? Or if I let her, is there some huge negative I haven't thought of? I am wondering what the pros and cons are to letting her get that kind of bikini. Partly to fit in with her new friends, also she likes to be trendy, and she thinks they are cute. So, of course my daughter desperately wants that kind of bikini too. The girls don't seem overly sexualized either, just normal middle school girls from everything I've seen. Plus there is always a parent somewhere nearby supervising. I asked another mom here if she ever worries about anything inappropriate, like them getting the attention of men, and she said no, thongs are so common it's not a big deal. I was kind of shocked at first, but it is apparently part of the culture here, and many girls wear them. The other girls wear extremely cheeky bikinis (either almost thongs or actual thongs). This being Hawaii, they hang out on the beach as much as I hung out at the mall around their age, which I think is healthy.
